An element of play is really important in my work. Humour and whimsy in the somewhat “hard” cultures of the Western world can only be a good thing, and for me personally, jewellery should make one smile, or even laugh and it should always be uplifting – there is enough going on all around us which is so serious, that to find humour where you least expect to is really unbeatable.
Handmade work, art and craftwork in particular, are good vehicles for humour because they have so much of their maker invested in them. That is one of the reasons people enjoy owning as well as making craft – it is personal, thoughtful, time-consuming, beautiful (hopefully!), and therefore meaningful. Craft has value because it has a story behind it which connects people (to each other, to the past, to objects), and if that story is a funny, endearing or mysterious one, even better.
My work is handmade from sterling silver, gold, copper, enamel and fresh water pearls.
