Craft Australia launches National Historic Collection online

The Craft Australia Historic Collection is a significant slide archive on the development and practice of the Australian Studio Craft Movement from the 1960s to the early 1990s. This archive is now available online to practitioners, curators and researchers.
The online archive includes over 4000 images, documenting the development of the studio craft movement in Australia and is charted across the disciplines of gold and silver smithing, textiles, ceramics, glass and wood. It includes extremely rare material from the 1960s and 1970s that predates the establishment of most of Australia’s tertiary training programs in craft.
Prior to closing in April 2012, Craft Australia had negotiated with the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) to rehouse the National Historic Collection as part of their library holdings which documents the history and development of Australian art and culture. Whilst the NHC will be managed by the NGA after the closure of Craft Australia the location for the collection will remain the same and can now be accessed online through the eHive collection management system and is also searchable on Picture Australia

Culture Night 2012 – call out for Dublin organisations!
Slide Show
The Culture Night initiative was launched in 2006 in Dublin by Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT), to provide a new and imaginative way for people from all walks of life to participate in the cultural life of the city. Since its inception, the event has grown year on year and in 2011, the event included over 156 cultural organisations in Dublin attracting over 160,000 people.
In view of the success of the Dublin event, the then Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, decided to extend the concept to towns, cities and counties across Ireland in 2008. This expansion proved hugely successful and Regional Culture Night was further extended in 2009, 2010 and 2011 when over 20 towns, cities and counties across Ireland participated, namely Dublin, Carlow, Cork, Galway City, Galway County – Oughterard, An Ghaeltacht, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Letterkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. Temple Bar Cultural Trust co-ordinates the regional event on behalf of the Department.
Culture Night 2012 will take place on Friday 21st September. We plan to build on the success of Culture Night to date and are interested in new and exciting ways to develop Culture Night as a unique offering of memorable experiences and to stimulate repeat visits to cultural attractions after Culture Night itself. We want to involve local arts, culture, heritage and all areas of the larger community such as local clubs, sports centres, schools, universities, local libraries as well as retail spaces and arts and cultural centres/organisations in the area.
On Culture Night, key artistic and cultural organisations in participating towns and cities, extend their opening hours until 11pm (if possible) to provide the public with increased free access to the various collections, workshops and other events hosted by the organisations.
Registration is now open for Dublin cultural organisations that wish to particpate in this year’s event. If you have any queries please contact Lorraine Maye in Temple Bar Cultural Trust on 01 677 2255 or email lmaye@templebar.ie
Art in Action, May Bank Holiday, Farmleigh
Art in Action is a 3-day arts & crafts festival where top artists and craftspeople from many different disciplines are invited to set up studio and demonstrate their work and skills live.
Visitors come to see how it’s done and are inspired; they are welcome to meet the artists informally and ask questions about their work and techniques.
Most of the art and craftwork on show is available for sale direct from the artists.
A wide range of practical classes is available each day, with adults and children catered for separately. Classes are designed to encourage the novice and each participant learns how to make a finished piece of art or craft for taking home.
The liberal arts are represented through a programme of music, drama, dance, story telling and lectures.
The event is renowned among visitors and artists alike not only for the breadth and quality of the art on show, but also for its wonderful organisation, relaxed family atmosphere and beautiful setting.
Art in Action has grown greatly in scale, quality and variety from its small beginnings in 1994. In that time over 85,000 visitors have spent a magical day watching hundreds of leading artists and craftspeople actively creating their work. More than 8,000 visitors are expected this year.
Art in Action is a not-for-profit event which honours the role of the artist in society. It is organised and staffed entirely on a voluntary basis and is held this year over the 3 days of the May Holiday Weekend.
