Engineers Week 2012 is ‘landing’ in Ireland on 27th February

Engineers Week 2012, this year themed ‘Connecting our lives’, is ‘landing’ in Ireland on Monday, February 27 and will run until Sunday, March 4.

The week-long series of activities across the country is run by Engineers Ireland and is a campaign held annually to promote engineering as a career and the importance of the profession to Ireland.  Highlight events over the week include an “ethical hackathon” highlighting security issues for third level technology students on Tuesday February 28 as well as the annual Volunteer Day on Thursday, March 1 when engineers go into schools across Ireland to help explain the importance of maths to students.  To see a full list of events taking place during the week log onto www.engineersweek.ie

Calling on companies to support the week and the public to explore what events are taking place in their locality, John Power, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said Engineers Week 2012 would show the transformational and varied nature of modern engineering. “The engineering profession is becoming increasingly diverse,” said Power, “with the modern engineer involved in everything from space travel technology design to games software development and medical technology.  Essentially, today’s engineer connects the different pieces that help our communities and cites function. Engineers Week 2012 will show the young and the curious the fantastic potential that a career in these emerging areas of engineering offers.”

“School children, teachers, families, parents and grandparents are all welcome.  There are some great activities taking place across the country so we encourage everyone to investigate what is happening close to them.”

Nearly 240 events will take place across the island of Ireland over the course of the week.  To find out more information about events taking place near you or to register your attendance log onto www.engineersweek.ie.

Merry Christmas! from Irish Design Shop on Vimeo.

A few weeks back, Fergus O’Neill (he of ‘keep going sure it’s grand’ fame) came up with a festive idea that would DEFINITELY get us on the news. The vision was to have ourselves singing the twelve days of Christmas with a selection of our products. Thankfully the vision changed. On the evening of filming, over a few beers, we decided to take a different approach (neither of us can carry a tune). Then, by sheer coincidence, in walked super talented editor Alex Synge (he of ‘keep sketch’ fame) offering his help. So we said yes please! THEN… the next day David Wall (he of Conor & David fame) was roped in to help with text, and so the ‘Three Wise Designers’ were formed. Between them, they have created a very nice little Christmas message of Irish craftiness and goodwill to one and all! Don’t think it will make the news but we hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
