www.Swoop.ie a Haven for All Things Handmade in Ireland

Tanya Grimson (one of Ireland’s leading fashion stylists) and Maria Dublin (Interior designer) have come together to launch a unique online marketplace that is open to all that produce and design their own collections in Ireland. The website encapsulates the essence of Irish design with its boutique appearance rather than the standard look of an e-commerce trading platform, allowing sellers to have the feel of a stand-alone store. The website design was produced by an Irish artist with each element of the website, including the instructions, hand painted to provide a truly unique and bespoke platform for both the sellers and buyer alike.

All sellers will still have the opportunity to create their own shop brand and to sell their goods directly to the buyer, via the payment facility on the website, but without the overheads as Swoop charges only 5% (+VAT) for each transaction. Each buyer will have the ability to upload their own images for a minimal listing charge, and as special introductory offer Swoop is waiving the listing fees for the first three months of trading, to the first 100 sellers to open their shop.

The concept of Swoop was born over coffees and buggies as both Maria and Tanya were enjoying first time motherhood and on maternity leave when they realised that through their respective backgrounds in fashion and interiors and their genuine love for creativity and design, that not only was there a niche in the market for selling Irish handmade design but a true calling for it.  Individual boutiques were unfortunately closing down at the hands of the recession leaving handcrafters and artisans with no outlet to show or sell their work. While other distressing online statistics further ignited that cause, as the Eurostat report announced in March 2010, that:

  • 62% of Irish E-Commerce Spend Goes Overseas

and

  • 29% of Irish online shoppers bought or ordered goods and services from the Internet within the last three months. However, unfortunately the majority of the transactions were made with companies from outside Ireland – with 62% of the e-commerce turnover was received abroad (39% in another EU state, 23% outside the Union).

Swoop was created to counteract these statistics and to allow artisans the facility to showcase their work to a larger worldwide consumer audience, without any elitism of selection. All designers who make their own goods in Ireland can now have the opportunity to sell their wares on a larger scale while being promoted through the continuous PR organised for the site. Maria and Tanya are not only passionate about their industry and the people who work in it, but they feel more than ever that it is time to put Irish Craft and design on the global map, to connect the worldwide audience with the Irish design market and to make Swoop a worldwide one stop shop for all things beautiful, handmade and Irish.

Facebook Pages: How to help your fans get your updates

{alt}

If you host a Facebook page for your craft business, you will have noticed a drop in the number of people seeing your updates. Pages are now being seen by 10% (or less) of those who have ‘liked’ them because of recent changes to how Facebook works.

Of course, some of those who have hit the ‘like’ button mightn’t notice but for those fans who wanted to get the news from you, there are things they can do to increase the likelihood of them seeing your updates (without you having to resort to paid promotion of particular status updates).

For your fans: To continue to receive Facebook page updates from pages you have ‘liked’ – hover your mouse on the “Like” button near the page’s name. A drop-down menu will appear. In the drop-down menu select “Add to interest lists.” You can then create an interest list – you can decide who you want to share it with and give it a name. Please note that there is also a ‘page feed’ in the left hand menu of the updates page (not on your timeline) of your personal FB account.

For you: In order to improve the visibility of your own updates, Facebook’s ‘edgerank‘ rating is all about engagement, ie the more shares, comments, likes, tags etc, that your updates receive the more visible your update, and they factor in the kind of content that you are circulating as well, i.e. circulating audio/visual/video material is preferred to text. If you want to know more about ‘Edgerank‘ and how it works you can find some detailed information here.

Craft NI’s facebook page is here. If you haven’t been receiving updates from us and you’d like to – we hope the above advice will help to improve matters.

Imagine Energy Competition

Imagine Energy competition  has just opened for entries.  Imagine Energy is an open ideas competition to develop and install a smart energy feature in Dublin’s city centre.

Codema and Dublin City Council are calling on designers, ICT professionals, creative thinkers and visual communicators to come up with a one-of-a-kind concept to inform and educate citizens about renewable energy in a creative and innovative way.

With €150,000 to be invested in the winning proposal, Imagine Energy is the largest competition of its kind in Europe so we are encouraging entrants to think big and think smart!

This competition is a blank canvas so we want applicants to be as imaginative as possible; we want you to grab the attention of passers-by!  The smart energy feature must highlight the link between renewable energy supply and demand but you can be as creative and original as possible in communicating this; be it through art, technology, light or even sound. There are many people out there who don’t know anything about renewable energy – the winning concept must inspire them.

Although the energy-smart feature will be a physical installation, it will also be complemented by a virtual component which will showcase how ICT and sustainability are merging to create an energy-smart city.

Imagine Energy is part of the INTERREG IVB Ace project and the competition organisers are Dublin sustainable energy adviser Codema and Dublin City Council.  Imagine Energy will be administered through Dublin City Council’s design portal, PIVOT Dublin.

I have attached some Imagine Energy posters which you might also find useful – I also have printed posters that I can send in the post so please feel free to contact me if you need hard copies.

To download the full competition brief and entry form, visit www.pivotdublin.com

Please feel free to forward this email to any colleagues, members or stakeholders who might also be interested in putting together an entry and if you have any questions at all or require further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
