Designer Mart is back on Cow’s Lane this Saturday February 4th!

Some of Ireland’s most creative and exciting craftspeople return to Dublin’s best outdoor market for design on Saturday Feb 4th.

Every Saturday, 10 – 5pm, this outdoor craft market takes to the streets of Cow’s Lane in the Old City, Temple Bar alongside the Queen of Tarts, Gutterbookshop, Cow’s Lane Designer Studio, Debbie Paul Jewellery, The Exchange, Retrospect and Find – a shop specialising in design, old and new.

Designer Mart features 25 Irish and Irish-based designers of fashion, jewellery, furnishings, crafts and visual arts. Since it’s rebranding from Temple Bar’s Fashion Market to Designer Mart in 2008, this outdoor market has become the ‘go-to’ source for those seeking a range of innovative and unique designs at affordable prices.

Designer Mart features some well established designers such as ceramicist Colm de Rís; artist Nicole Tilley; wood-turner Kieran Reynolds and fashion designer Chupi whose clothing and accessory range are “Made in Ireland, Loved Everywhere” and are created “for your inner magpie”!

This year, Designer Mart welcomes the up and coming talents of surrealist pop artist, Marianne Wolf of ‘Mon Petit Pois’, Ann Marie Flanagan of ‘Honeybee Headwear’ and ‘ThunderSolas’ – a new and exciting company providing leather designs for men and women.

To add to the ambience and character of Cow’s Lane, Designer Mart is delighted to introduce the eye-catching flower arrangements created by ‘The Informal Florist’– a small flower company that takes an innovative and slightly rebellious approach to floral design!

Other gems contributing to Designer Mart’s creative hub are Jamie Lewis’s hand-felted wool products including satchels, trilby hats, purses and home-ware. Fused glass jewellery by Tunde Tussal; beaded and precious stoned jewellery by ‘Trinket Box’ and father / daughter duo ‘Reichhold Originals’–who make their own glass mounted in sterling silver.

Commenting on the return of Designer Mar, Manager, Eimear Chaomhánach from Temple Bar Cultural Trust said “I am particularly excited about the number of new and exciting independent design companies that have successfully set-up business with us in Designer Mart. This year’s offering delivers an innovative approach to design and Irish craft. The architecturally award winning Old City located in the west end of Temple Bar is fast becoming the designer quarter of Dublin City.”

Visual Art is another dimension of Designer Mart, carrying beautiful framed watercolours by Eoghan Talbot and finely detailed lino cuts created in ‘The Printing Room’. Taking handmade skin-care seriously is the Wexford-based company ‘SunRose Garden’ – who are driven by the belief that health and beauty care should be as natural as possible and available at a fair price.

Designer Mart is the place to go if you want to try out something different, and find uniquely crafted items made with passion and flair by people who you will meet face to face. This outdoor market is a refreshing alternative to high street shopping and a great way to support small independent Irish businesses!

Dubh: Dialogues in Black

2 Feb 2012 — 15 Mar 2012
29 Molesworth Street
Dublin 2, Ireland
Tel +353 1 644 9459
Email info@oliversearsgallery.com

Oliver Sears Gallery is pleased to announce Dubh: Dialogues in Black, an exhibition of contemporary objects featuring work by Irish designers and artists, in dialogue with their American peers. This is the second in a series of three exhibitions taking place under the direction of designer Joseph Walsh in an exciting new initiative called STUDIO practice established to facilitate dialogue, build relationships and encourage interdisciplinary engagements between Irish Artists, Designers and Studio Makers and their international contemporaries and key influencers.

In Dubh: Dialogues in Black international curator Brian Kennedy looks at black as both a physical and an emotional starting point for the most interesting creative voices from Ireland in dialogue with their American peers. In the show he will again work with a core group of the artists/designers who featured in the first exhibition. Some like Sara Flynn, Liam Flynn and Eily O Connell are well known for their authoritative use of black while others like Joseph Walsh, Frances Lambe and Karl Harron are developing new techniques and approaches especially for the exhibition. This project also places great importance on how design/craft is viewed and discussed; as a result the catalogue for Dubh: Dialogues in Black will include essays by Irish and American writers, who will discuss and debate the issues surrounding the exhibition.

Dubh: Dialogues in Black provides the opportunity to build on the successes of MATERIALpoetry and establish a continuing presence for Irish art & design in New York city which will, in the longer term, help to establish a profile and awareness of a new generation of Irish artists and studio makers internationally. Following the show in New York, the exhibition returns to Ireland where it will appear at Oliver Sears Gallery, 29 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 from 2nd February – 16th March 2012.

Further information can be found on the STUDIO practice website:   www.studiopractice.ie

Dubh: Dialogues in Black in New York is supported by Culture Ireland through their Imagine Ireland

programme; a year-long season of Irish arts in America in 2011, an initiative of Culture Ireland, with funding from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport. In Ireland the exhibition is supported by the Embassy of the United States of America, Dublin.

Dubh: Dialogues in black is supported by the Crafts Council of Ireland. In addition the Crafts Council of Ireland and Craft Northern Ireland have designated 2011 as Year of Craft and this exhibition has been included in the Year of Craft 2011 programme of events.

Dubh: Dialogues in Black will receive support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland while the exhibition’s academic partner is CIT Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork. This project is part of a series of exhibitions presented by STUDIO practice, which is directed by Joseph Walsh and receives the continued support of Joseph Walsh Studio.

Dubh: Dialogues in Black will be hosted in Dublin, Ireland by Oliver Sears Gallery, www.oliversearsgallery.com
