Culture and the Economy – what does the future look like? 9 May

Wednesday 9th May, 2012 at 10am-12.30pm
Wood Quay Venue, Dublin 8

Where are the opportunities for culture and creative industries in a constantly changing economic environment?
We’ve invited three renowned economists David Throsby, John O’Hagan and George Lee to shed new light on this question and propose compelling alternatives…

David Throsby
David Throsby is professor of economics at Macquarrie University, Sydney, and is one of a rare breed – a leading expert in the field of cultural economics. He co-authored the 2010 Culture and Innovation Report for NESTA where he showed how cultural organisations can use new technologies and innovative business models to communicate with audiences on an entirely new level.

John O’Hagan
John O’Hagan is professor of economics at Trinity College, Dublin, and one of the leading specialists on the economics of the arts and culture. He is a committed advocate for the need to find new methods for measuring the value and contribution made by the arts outside the traditional impact study.

George Lee (Chair)
George Lee is a renowned broadcaster and economist, and former economics editor with RTE. Through his successful radio and television series, The Business, George is a champion for indigenous small businesses that embrace innovation, creativity and new ideas.

Mark Nagurski
Mark Nagurski is a Derry-based entrepreneur whose work with Digital Derry and iDDICTIVE focuses on promoting innovation and creative thinking in business. He is Digital Champion for the city of Derry, leading a collaborative cross-sectoral team focusing on supporting and promoting the development of the digital sector in Derry and the North-west.

Art in Action, May Bank Holiday, Farmleigh

Art in Action is a 3-day arts & crafts festival where top artists and craftspeople from many different disciplines are invited to set up studio and demonstrate their work and skills live.

Visitors come to see how it’s done and are inspired; they are welcome to meet the artists informally and ask questions about their work and techniques.

Most of the art and craftwork on show is available for sale direct from the artists.

A wide range of practical classes is available each day, with adults and children catered for separately. Classes are designed to encourage the novice and each participant learns how to make a finished piece of art or craft for taking home.

The liberal arts are represented through a programme of music, drama, dance, story telling and lectures.

The event is renowned among visitors and artists alike not only for the breadth and quality of the art on show, but also for its wonderful organisation, relaxed family atmosphere and beautiful setting.

Art in Action
has grown greatly in scale, quality and variety from its small beginnings in 1994. In that time over 85,000 visitors have spent a magical day watching hundreds of leading artists and craftspeople actively creating their work. More than 8,000 visitors are expected this year.

Art in Action is a not-for-profit event which honours the role of the artist in society. It is organised and staffed entirely on a voluntary basis and is held this year over the 3 days of the May Holiday Weekend.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro brings Italian style to Ireland with the Peroni Moda Awards

- Peroni Nastro Azzurro launches the Peroni Moda Awards in Ireland and announces partnership with Italian designer Marco De Vincenzo who creates limited edition blue ribbon foulard -

Peroni Nastro Azzurro (PNA) has always enjoyed a very close relationship with Italian fashion and today, the leading premium Italian beer brand has launched The Peroni Moda Awards at the pop-up Peroni Boutique at No 6 Castle Market Street. Peroni Nastro Azzurro announce the competition to discover talented and aspiring designers in Ireland, alongside the announcement of the latest fashion partnership with Italian designer Marco de Vincenzo, who will be style ambassador with the brand for a new and exciting collaboration exclusive to Ireland.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro has always celebrated the achievements of Italian fashion through shared values of craftsmanship, attention to detail and authenticity. The exciting new collaboration with Marco de Vincenzo, the emerging fashion designer who has worked side-by-side with Silvia Venturini Fendi for the past 8 years, is yet another example of these partnerships.

As part of this collaboration, De Vincenzo has created an exclusive, limited-edition foulard that intertwines Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s unique style, natural flair and creativity while upholding the Italian way of bringing style to everyday items.  The limited-edition blue ribbon foulard and Marco’s Spring/Summer 2012 (SS12) collection Olimpia will be available to view at the Peroni Boutique for a limited time* and available to purchase exclusively from The Design Centre in Powerscourt Town Centre from May 31st.

The Peroni Moda Awards seek to push the boundaries of excellence and style with the competition challenging designers to create a fashion look that celebrates the iconic Peroni Nastro Azzurro blue ribbon. The ten finalists will be chosen to create and see their entry on the catwalk in front of Ireland’s fashion influencers in Dublin in October 2012. The overall winner will enjoy an opportunity of a lifetime to work directly with Marco De Vincenzo in Milan as he prepares his Spring / Summer 2013 collection for his show in Milan Fashion Week. For more information, register at peronimoda@drury.ie/ visit www.promoterms.com/peronimoda

Federica Iaconetti, Peroni Nastro Azzurro brand manager said: Peroni Nastro Azzurro exemplifies the values and traditions of Italian craftsmanship, passion and attention to detail, all the attributes which contribute to the effortless style that comes so naturally to Italians. The launch of the Peroni Moda Awards in Ireland, recognising and awarding these values, is at the heart of the brand. We are so excited to see what Irish designers create to uphold this effortless and inspirational Italian style values and how they exemplify and integrate the PNA Blue Ribbon, symbolic of the Peroni values, into their designs.

Commenting on the partnership, Marco De Vincenzo said:I am honoured to have been asked to be part of the Peroni Nastro Azzurro initiative in Ireland celebrating Italy’s heritage. It is exciting for me as a designer to be part of a distinguished family of talents that have been chosen, past and present, to represent Italy’s excellence in partnership with Peroni Nastro Azzurro. This occasion is particularly significant to me as I have the chance to showcase my work and my creative voice to a country I very much love.

*The Peroni Boutique, located in Dublin’s Creative Quarter at No.6 Castle Market Street, is opening today and will house a gallery and looks from De Vincenzo’s SS12 collection while showcasing the iconic foulard that has been created by Marco De Vincenzo as part of the collaboration. The boutique is exclusively open for browsing from May 31st to June 6th.

“Peroni Nastro Azzurro is continuing to push the boundaries and connect with consumers in a unique way” continued Federica Iaconetti, Peroni Nastro Azzurro Brand Manager in Ireland. “We want Peroni Nastro Azzurro to convey the brand’s values that encompass style, authenticity and the utmost Italian quality which the awards and partnership help us to achieve”.

About Marco De Vincenzo

Marco De Vincenzo was born in Messina in March 1978. When he was only eighteen he moved to Rome and, after graduating in Fashion and Costume at the European Institute of Design, joined the Office of Fendi style where for eight years is the inseparable attendant of Silvia Venturini Fendi for the line of accessories.
In the last years, in parallel, has developed its own line of clothing with which he has debuted in Paris in January 28, 2009.  In July of the same year Marco won the first prize in the “Who’s on Next” competition organized by the director of Vogue Italy Franca Sozzani.  His prêt-à-porter is in Milan Fashion Week calendar starting from September 2009.
