CCoI EXTERNAL EXHIBITIONS FUND

Funding available from CCoI: The External Exhibitions Fund has been set up to offer annual support to the development of high-quality independent craft-based exhibitions run by individuals, organisations or groups including CCoI Guilds, Associations, Networks & Societies (GANS).

The purpose of the fund is:
- To stimulate and reward the development of professional exhibition skills in makers and curators of craft.
- To develop professional opportunities for Irish makers and curators, both nationally and internationally.
- To encourage national and international cultural/arts venues to programme Irish craft of exhibition quality.
- To increase awareness and grow the profile of Irish craft nationally and internationally, in line with the strategic objectives of the Crafts Council of Ireland.

This annual fund will support a small number of well-planned, feasible exhibitions featuring Irish craft in Ireland or abroad. This call will fund proposals due to take place in 2012. The maximum that will be allocated to any individual proposal is €7,000. Preference will be given to projects that have match-funding or funding from other sources. Exhibitions can be in recognized venues or one-off site-specific projects, organized by individuals, groups, partnerships or organisations.

Blueprint – Singapore Fashion Exhibition

BLUEPRINT is the first tradeshow in the world to launch exclusively cruise collections with delivery Oct. – Feb. 2012 will also see the addition of a digital fair portal to launch high summer collections, delivery April  - August. 2011 was the second installation of BLUEPRINT which saw 105 exhibiting brands and 2012 expects to host approx. >200 curated emerging labels.

2011 also saw >250 buyers from over 19 countries. 2012 expects to see that figure rise to approx. 600 buyers.

In today’s exceedingly competitive climate it is important to maintain the edge on the competition and BLUEPRINT provides a platform for buyers to source emerging labels from both the East as well as the West at competitive price points. BLUEPRINT also sees itself as a gateway between east & west, also providing western designers a chance to come in contact with buyers from both the Middle East & Asia.

BLUEPRINT is also unique in that it has introduced the concept of selling directly at Emporium, meaning that after the 2 day tradeshow, we open the doors to the public and convert into a retail platform where exhibitors have the opportunity to sell current stock. 2011 saw approx. 4000 consumers in attendance. Emporium is also provides an opportunity for labels to get a snapshot of Asian tastes & tendencies in a comfortable & safe environment.

BLUEPRINT  www.blueprint.sg

In order to qualify to participate in BLUEPRINT 2012, exhibitors would need to be in a position to create a cruise collection by May 2012 and be export ready with approx. 3 – 4 seasons behind them.

CONVERSATIONS

Conversations is a series of three short films, shot in homes across Dublin in which groups of five people with diverse opinions on design engage in lively, thought-provoking discussions. The films focus on the potential legacy of Dublin as World Design Capital and have fed into PIVOT Dublin’s four proposed themes: Connecting Cities, Making Cities Lighter, Making Cities Flow, and Making Cities Smile.

DIALOGUE

Dialogue is a film project initiated by PIVOT Dublin but sustained by the members of Dublin’s vast creative community, each of whom is filmed in their studio or workspace. The film begins with a question about design, posed by PIVOT Dublin. The first respondent then posed a question to the next respondent to reply to, and so on. Contributers did not know the identity of the person who selected them, but they did know whom they, in turn, put a question to.

Participants were asked to communicate the question visually where possible, whether by writing it down, typing it, animating it or drawing it. The film is presented as a linear edit and as a series of short clips. It captures the diversity and energy of the design and creative community in Dublin, and is a fascinating snapshot of contemporary design practice.

SCHOOL LEAVERS CAN ‘CRAFT’ THEIR FUTURES WITH A WIDE RANGE OF CAREER OPTIONS IN CRAFT AND DESIGN

There is a wide range of courses and career options to choose from in the craft and design sector, according to the Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI).

Metal – to become a jeweller, silversmith, goldsmith, blacksmith or farrier with 3rd level courses and apprenticeships of three to four years on offer

Wood – to do woodturning, furniture design and furniture making, or basket making with apprenticeships of three to four years

Clay – to train as a ceramicist, potter, ceramic artist or designer with 3rd level courses of three to four years

Glass – to work as a glassmaker or glass artist with courses ranging from one year up to four years for specialist degree programmes

Textiles – to become a textile artist/designer or a fashion designer with 3rd level courses or apprenticeships of three to four years.

The third level institutions providing craft related courses at National Qualification Framework (NFQ) Levels 6 to 8 include:

· Cork Institute of Technology, (CIT) Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork

· Galway & Mayo Institute of Technology, (GMIT) Galway & Letterfrack

· Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) Limerick School of Art & Design

· The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin

· The University of Ulster

This year Cork Institute of Technology, (CIT) Crawford College of Art & Design has introduced a new honours Applied Art course offering students the opportunity to creatively develop and make objects.

Other key providers of craft education outside of higher education institutions include:

VECs – providing a range of craft and arts-related courses across Ireland. Craft-related Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses are also provided in vocational schools and colleges including Grennan Mill in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny (which provides foundation courses in a number of craft disciplines), and Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa and St Johns Central College in Cork

SOLAS (formerly FÁS) – provides trainee and apprenticeship programmes in a number of areas such as carpentry and joinery, farriery, jewellery-making and thatching.

Crafts Council of Ireland – offers high-quality, intensive two-year courses.
A Jewellery & Goldsmithing Course and a Ceramics Skills & Design course. These programmes have a 90% plus employment rate.

Head of Education, Training & Development at CCoI, John Tynan, is reminding young people they can ‘craft’ their future by opting to master skills with a variety of materials including clay, glass, metal, textiles, and wood.
With increased focus on the potential of the creative and cultural industries to enhance job creation and innovation, Mr Tynan said it is important that Leaving Cert students are aware of craft and design related options outside of the CAO points race.

According to a recent EU study, “micro and craft-type enterprises make up not only the vast majority of SMEs in Europe, but are also the main source of job creation in the European Union, being active in many traditional professions that are essential for the prosperity and wellbeing of both urban and rural areas.”[1]

In Ireland the Creative and Cultural Industries (CCIs) employ over 70,000 according to a 2010 EU report,[2] while across Europe micro-enterprises account for 53% of all jobs[3].
Wishing students the best of luck with their results today Mr Tynan said: “The 60,000 plus learners who will get their Leaving Certificate results on August 17th are facing a significant increase in points for virtually all college courses with a tighter jobs market driving up competition for places.

“However there is an opportunity to undertake skills-based training and to carve out a unique career designing and crafting products for the global marketplace”, highlighted Mr Tynan. “A future in a craft enterprise allows creative design talents and business skills to come together in an exciting and varied way.”

Louise Allen, Education and Innovation Manager with CCoI, said undertaking training in a craft related discipline is a rich and rewarding training choice that can lead to a fulfilling and sustainable career in craft as part of the cultural and creative industries.

“Now more than ever creativity, innovation and design are essential skills that enhance the potential for job creation and employment”, she added.

A list of craft-related education provision is included in the Crafts Council of Ireland report “Creative Pathways – A Review of Craft & Education Training in Ireland” available on the CCoI website at www.ccoi.ie
