Business Development Programme 2011 – 2012: Seminar 2
Craft NI’s Business Development Programme Seminar 2 – ‘Developing Ranges/Services and Exploring Markets’ – with guest speaker Matthew Maran (photographer) will be held on the 29th March 2012, 10.30am-1pm at Down Arts Centre.
Craft NI’s Business Development Programme 2012 – 2013 got off to an excellent start in January with a fantastic turnout of makers for the first seminar which was held at the University of Ulster. This programme, which is funded by Invest Northern Ireland as part of the making it 2011 programme, is being delivered by Dr Rachel Smart and seminars are open to all interested makers.
Seminars are charged at £25 each offering excellent value for money and allowing many makers to benefit from Rachel’s expertise and also that of guest speakers, the first of which will be Photographer Matthew Maran.

• Critically evaluate your work
• See your work from a customer’s perspective
• Understand the tools required to show your work for exhibition and sale
• Push your work to research and develop new pieces for the gaps and match this to markets.

These fairs have proved to be a great success both by the crafters and the public as its a “crafts only” fair.
The venue itself is wonderful, bright and airy, easily accessible and free carparking and with every convenience available.

At this moment in time there are enough knitters of children’s and adults and jewellery but needed is fashion knitwear, pottery, woodwork, and always looking for that unusual entrepreneurial crafter.

AN INTERNATIONAL CRAFT FILM CONTEST FOR STUDENTS
The contest is an innovative approach to spread awareness among students about craft and create an archive of craft films on traditional crafts.
The entries should be 8 to 10 min on the following topics only
Crafts – A fight for survival.
Crafts – The magic of creation.
Crafts – A signpost of culture.
The entries can be in English or in any other language, subtitled in English.
The entry forms and other details can be downloaded from WCC website.
The entry forms should be filled in completely and registration submitted by email before August 1st 2012.
The entries should be submitted in an approved DVD FORMAT as a hardcopy before SEP 1ST 2012 to the WCC address given in the entry form.
The winning entries will be screened at International film festivals.
The best three films will receive a citation and a cash award of USD 10000, 5000 and 3000 [INR equivalent] respectively.
There is no entry fee.

3) Continuing Professional Development Fund
The Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) Fund for Continued Professional Development is an important opportunity for established craft enterprises.
This fund covers attendance at workshops, training courses, master classes and conferences by individual craftspeople. Networks and groups can also apply to bring expertise to Ireland to deliver a master class or in turn a group application can be made to attend a master class outside of Ireland.

4) Consumer Shows – Bloom 2012
The Crafts Council of Ireland is planning to have a craft presence at Bloom 2012 – Phoenix Park, Dublin, 31st May to 4th June 2012. We are currently finalising plans regarding location, stand type and size with the organisers and more detailed information and maps will be available shortly. In the meantime, given the demand from makers for this event, we are proceeding with the application and selection process.

5) International Fair Fund
The International Fair Fund has been developed to financially assist craftspeople in reaching key export markets.
The fund provides match funding up to the value of €4,000 for wholesale trade fairs abroad.
If your application is successful, CCoI will subsidise up to a maximum of 50% of the cost of:
- Economy return airfare or ferry
- Stand costs
- Product transport / freight costs
- Accommodation
Maximum CCoI subsidy per show: UK €1,500, Europe €2,500 and USA €4,000.

6) Funded Residency Award at Tuilerie de Pouligny, France
The Crafts Council of Ireland have partnered with Ateliers d’Art de France to provide two ceramicists with the opportunity to undertake a fully funded residency at Tuilerie de Pouligny, Creuse, France.
Available from June to August 2012.
Deadline for applications: 5pm, 15th April 2012.
Duration: 4 – 8 weeks

Creative Island will once again take centre stage at Showcase 2013 – Ireland’s Creative Expo. Makers of crafted pieces exclusively Imagined, Designed and Made in Ireland are invited to submit an application form to the Crafts Council of Ireland for consideration for Creative Island 2013.

9) Call For Entries: RDS National Crafts Competition 2012
The Call for Entries for this year’s RDS National Crafts Competition has been announced. Regarded as one of the largest competitive platforms for craft in Europe, the RDS brings an international panel of judges to Ireland to adjudicate its 20 category crafts competition. Open to craft makers and designers living in Ireland or Irish makers abroad, the competition attracts the very best in amateur and professional crafts practices. With a prize fund in excess of €27,000 in RDS prizes and awards, the highest accolade is the RDS Award of Excellence of €7,000 and the California Gold Medal. The competition is supported by the Crafts Council of Ireland.

10) CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Crafts Council of Ireland Ceramic Skills and Design Course
This course aims to develop a range of skills to such a level of quality that those who complete it will be able to follow careers in the industry according to their talents, strengths and aspirations. To achieve this, the course combines the sound technical training required by the modern workshop and industry at large, and the trainees’ creative development according to their talents and abilities. As a result, graduates have the ability to respond confidently to changing markets.
For September 2012 intake.

11) Building Craft Enterprise – Making It In Business Programme 2012 – 2013
A development programme for graduate and emerging craft enterprises, the objective of this programme is to develop and nurture craft enterprises to optimise the opportunities in craft channels to market. It is open to suitable Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) registered participants up to four years in business wishing to grow their craft enterprise.
As one of a group of 12 craft businesses this course includes:
- 8 days of specialist workshops including:
Marketing, Sales, Business Planning, Innovation and Product Development. - Branding and preparation for Showcase or other exhibitions.
- Mentoring and business planning support.
